Design For a Gentler Cancer Cure
On the road to Zytiga the first drug discovered by Professor Gerry Potter was called Tamandron. This was designed as an antiandrogen based on the Tamoxifen structure, hence the name Tamandron. The idea was to produce a drug for prostate cancer that is as good as Tamoxifen is for breast cancer. This proved to be an active antiandrogen with potential for the treatment of prostate cancer similar in action to MDV3100. However it was difficult to sythesise in large amounts and had to be abandoned in favour of developing Zytiga. Abiraterone (Zytiga) was designed as the ultimate agent for blocking androgen synthesis through being a potent inhibitor of the enzyme CYP17 and has gone on to be an effective treatment for advanced prostate cancer.
